Just as last month on the 17th was International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, today is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. Below are some things you can do:
- Listen to women. Learn how violence has affected her life. Turn to local organizations as well and hear the stories they have gathered, as well as the stats, knowledge and experiences. Talk with them, contribute financially, read their publications.
- Learn about the problem. Debunk the myths, understand where the greatest risk is, see past denials, figure out the underlying reasons why violence occurs. How is violence learned? What is seen as falsely seen as acceptable? How do they specifically abuse their power, control, and privilege?
- Wear a white ribbon. For two weeks (until December 6), as a conversation starter to raise awareness, debate, change.
- Challenge ingrained violence. Such as sexist language and jokes.
- Oppose it when you see it.
- Support local women’s programs and other educational efforts and organizations.
- Check yourself. If you’ve contributed, make amends. If you need professional help, get it. Recognize the subtle ways of domineering women through conversations or in controlling their lives.
- Work for long-term solutions. Support the legal system that takes this matter seriously. Change attitudes. Change how children grow up.
