- Occupational therapy allows patients to engage in the occupation of life. Occupations are “activities given meaning by an individual and a culture, including looking after themselves, enjoying life, and contributing to the social and economic fabric of their communities (Law, Polatajko, Baptiste, & Townsend, 1997, p. 32)
- The Occupational Therapy Practice Framework: Domain and Process gives a focused description, emphasizing occupation and reflecting language used by WHO’s ICF. For example, our Performance in Areas of Occupation such as activities of daily living (ADLs) includes eating, feeding, toilet hygiene, and sexual activity. We use motor, process, and communication skills in context with the spiritual, temporal and virtual environments within performance patterns of habits, routines, and roles. In other words, babies mostly participate in the occupations of breathing and feeding on a schedule. Students have occupations of play and education in the school setting. Adults and senior citizens have occupations of work and social participation that varies between cultures. Veterans and others with mental illnesses could work on regaining occupations of leisure and ADLs.

The occupational therapist is running B.D. through a model kitchen to get used to living life again:
-
Panel 1: Doctor: Welcome to Fort Independence, B.D. Or as everyone here calls it, “The Apartment”!
-
Panel 2: Doctor: This is where occupational therapy takes place, where we help you maximize daily life functioning!
-
Panel 3: Doctor: While some people may think O.T. lacks the glamour of physical therapy, the life skills we work on here are critical to successful re-entry.
-
Panel 4: Doctor: For instance, we’ll show you how to get in and out of a tub or shower on your own…
-
Panel 5:
Doctor: and lots of other everyday tasks!
Doctor: For example, what if your wife asks you to remove the trash can from under the counter? What’s your strategy? -
Panel 6:
Man: I’ll say, “You do it. I lost a leg in Iraq.”
Doctor: No, I mean bio-mechanically.
